For those of you who love taking Charleston vacations and weekend getaways to the Holy City, why not switch up your trip with a visit to the famous Folly Beach.

Located just 20 minutes from downtown Charleston, Folly is a unique setting that boasts a casual, eclectic, and funky style. This city is one of the Great Charleston area’s most fun and happening scenes, thanks to a laid-back atmosphere, fun nightlife, and great beachside eateries, cafes, and restaurants.

What to see and do on Folly Beach:

With a long list of outdoor activities, Folly Beach is one of Charleston’s most acclaimed attractions. Some of the most popular things to do in this island town include fishing on the Folly Beach pier (just make sure to get your SC fishing license, which you can purchase online), boat charters, scooter rentals, and biking.

There are also kayak rentals and paddleboards available, which both offer a great way to explore the Folly Beach waterways. Both guided and non-guided tours are available for kayak and paddleboard rentals.

Surfing is another huge Folly Beach activity and there are several companies in the area that offer excellent surf lessons for all ages!

If you’ve exhausted yourself with outdoor activities on Folly, then take a seat, grab some popcorn, and relax on the beach as you enjoy the Folly Beach Movie Night, which happens every Wednesday evening at TIDES Folly Beach during the summer months. Make sure to check the Folly Beach Events Calendar to see what the next movie showing will be.

Folly also hosts several Moonlight Mixer-Shaggin’ on the Pier events throughout the year, which are an absolute blast! During these events, visitors can listen to live music, enjoy shagging (which is a dance and not the other “thing”!), great food, and refreshing beverages.

Where to eat:

When it comes to tasty seafood eats and out-of-this-world southern cuisine, Folly Beach has it down to an art.

We’ve listed some of our favorite Folly Beach restaurants below:

Lost Dog Café: You might have seen several people walking around Charleston with the Lost Dog Café T-shirt on, and it’s for a good reason. They serve up some of the tastiest bites in the area, PLUS, they have a great, laid-back atmosphere (and cool T-shirts, of course!). This is a great place to go if you’re looking for a delicious breakfast; try their huevos rancheros—they are AMAZING.

Loggerheads Beach Grill: With great live music and Karaoke nights, you’re sure to have an absolute blast at this Folly Beach favorite. Swing by for lunch or dinner to enjoy everything from salads to soups, sandwiches to pastas, and seafood plates to specialty cocktails and brews.

BLU Restaurant & Bar: If you’re looking for waterfront dining, this is the place to go! With an extensive seafood menu for lunch and dinner, visitors and locals, alike, flock to BLU to try some of their tasty local catches.

Taco Boy: If you’re looking for one mean taco, a cheesy quesadilla, or an AMAZING margarita, Taco Boy is where it’s at. They have a huge selection of different tacos to choose from and each and every one is delicious. And definitely don’t forget to try the Mexican street corn.

Where to sleep:

If you’re visiting Folly Beach with a big group of friends or family, we definitely suggest renting a house. This is a great way to get some privacy, have a cookout in your backyard, and just kick back and relax. Click here to learn about the Folly Beach vacation rentals.

If you’re visiting for the weekend with a friend or spouse, staying at a Folly Beach hotel / inn is a great option. Choose between the Tides Hotel, which is located right on the water, or the Water’s Edge Inn (which was actually Voted by Conde Nast as the best place to stay in one of the top 12 Beach Towns in America!).
