Captain Terry during his pirate days!

When did you first start sailing?

“In the late 60s we bought an old motor whaleboat, took off the motor and rigged up a sail. I used to be in the Navy so I knew about navigation, but had no sailing training. We headed to the Caribbean but soon hit 20-foot seas.  After a few days of waves breaking over the bow, we got picked up by a tanker that was headed to Massachusetts.”

Terry has been sailing ever since and has had his captain’s license for over 35 years!

Before joining the Pride crew, Terry was the captain aboard the 78-foot sailing schooner, the Jolly Rover, in Georgetown. On the Jolly Rover, a family-friendly pirate ship, Terry served as Captain Claw, a fierce pirate, taking passengers up the Sampit River. His crew, a team of swash-buckling pirates, entertained families with pirate stories and sayings and even let the children participate in raising the sails.

Since leaving his stint as a pirate aboard the Jolly Rover, Captain Terry has joined us on The Schooner Pride where he now serves as one of our veteran captains.

What do you love most about sailing?

“I’d say the freedom and self reliance. It’s your world; you’re responsible for what happens out there. It’s the only place I really know where you can cut loose. I really enjoy sailing (The Schooner Pride). I’ve got the best crew in the southeast.”
