Summer is a wonderful time to visit the Holy City. But the heat and humidity don’t take a vacation, so be prepared for warm days and those summertime pop-up showers, which are always a possibility in the afternoons.
To beat the heat or avoid a stray shower, try one of these tours and attractions guaranteed to keep you cool while you’re soaking in the history and culture of Charleston.
- South Carolina Aquarium – Young and old will enjoy spending time learning about South Carolina’s wildlife and eco-systems. Visit exhibits that take guests on a journey from the mountains to the sea with 60 unique habitats. Don’t miss the 385,000-gallon Great Ocean Tank filled with sharks, a host of various fish and a 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle named Caretta. Watch divers swim among the sea creatures during the daily dive shows. New this summer is the interactive Shark Shallows exhibit. The 20,000-gallon touch tank features a deep area where the animals can swim uninterrupted and a shallow area where guests can discover how sharks and rays feel.
- The Charleston Museum – Established in 1773, this is America’s first museum. Explore Charleston and Civil War history in a number of exhibits. The museum also has special exhibits and educational programs for children, including Kidstory with hands-on displays where children can examine creatures under a microscope, raise a pirate flag and play in a “kid-sized” historic mansion.
