Let’s face it. Planning a Charleston event for your friends, family, or colleagues can be quite stressful. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be when you hire a reputable caterer. One of our favorite caterers, who we use for special group events, wedding and rehearsal dinners, and corporate events aboard our ships, is Duvall Catering & Event Design.
See below for our interview with Isabelle Donovan of Duvall Catering:
We’re an active member of the Sustainability Institute and were awarded the 2012 Green Business Award. We try to compost, when possible, and use green compostable disposable plates and flatware. The green effort most near and dear to our hearts is our effort to support local agriculture and the local food economy. We try our hardest to source local and seasonal ingredients from vegetables to grains, and cheese to meats and fish! It’s about doing the right thing for our community and local economy, but it also yields much better food!
2. What makes Duvall different from other caterers in the area? In other words, what do clients experience by using Duvall that they can’t experience with other caterers in the area?
We pride ourselves on two things. The first, we’re a turnkey company. From your rentals to floor plan, staffing and menu development, bar, design and décor, floral, and day-of coordination, everything we do is handled under one roof. The cohesion that comes about when a solid team is working on your event from start to finish is really noticeable.
Secondly, we’re a from-scratch kitchen. This means we make everything by hand, oftentimes cooking the food just moments before it is served. If you walk into our kitchen, you’ll see chefs zesting lemons and chopping fresh herbs—none of it is pre-packaged. Being a from-scratch kitchen allows us to customize menus for each client in a way that many caterers can’t. No two clients or palates are the same and we work our hardest to cater to individual needs.
3. What type of services do you offer clients and what are the most popular of these services? Why do you think that is?
We offer menu, bar, staffing, rental coordination, custom floor plan, full service design and décor, in-house floral, and day-of coordination. Our clients typically choose Duvall because they like the idea of everything being under one roof. Typically, catering will include menu development, bar packages, rentals, custom floor plan and staffing. Oftentimes our clients will use our design and décor department for lounge, draping, floral and lighting.
4. Who is behind the food at Duvall and what is your food philosophy?
At Duvall, everyone’s behind the food. We have a great team of passionate people who talk food all day. Our executive chef, Matt Greene, and sous chef, Britney Jerome, are really young, talented chefs who bring a lot of creativity to our menus. They’ve worked all over the country in many restaurants and have a solid understanding of classic cuisine that we love to incorporate into new innovative menu items.
Being in Charleston, it goes without saying that Lowcountry fare is one of the favorites. At the end of the day, good cooking is about high-quality ingredients that are thoughtfully prepared—this is the core of our food philosophy. We work closely with local vendors like Limehouse, GrowFood Carolina, and local fishmongers to ensure we get great quality ingredients.
