One way to describe Mexican food is fun. That’s a major reason why it is so popular here in Charleston! Another reason is there are lots of really good choices for an awesome, authentic Mexican taco (and more), all around Charleston and her surrounding areas. To add to the appeal, many establishments offer outdoor seating as well for a casual atmosphere, perfect for bringing the family or meeting friends after work. Is there a more relaxing way to end the busy day than with a cooling Sangria, Margarita, or perhaps some sweet tea together with a great taco on the patio? Whether you are strolling downtown, doing some sightseeing, taking part in some activities in Mt. Pleasant, or enjoying a day at the beach on Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, or Folly Beach, a good taco is never more than walking distance away!
Downtown Charleston has some fun, very casual, and very great Mexican restaurants and eateries, such as Taco Boy, located at 217 Huger Street (very close to the Ravenel Bridge). They also have a second location on Folly Beach, at 15 Center Street. If you are a taco lover, you should definitely try one at Taco Boy. You can get many different kinds, filled with chicken, steak, pork, fish, etc. (The salsa trio is great too!). Their Mexican Street Corn is amazing!
Also, located downtown at 211 Rutledge Street is Fuel. Here you will find a variety of tacos and other Caribbean-influenced dishes. Try the fresh caught local tuna taco or perhaps the local fresh caught shrimp taco! Start off with the trio of house-made salsas, yum!
Sullivan’s Island is home to Taco Mamacita, located at 2213 Middle Street, and perfect after a day at the beach. You don’t even have to drive there! It is just a few blocks from the beach. Here you will find many different and interesting tacos as well, along with enchiladas and Mexican street corn, just to name a few. The chicken tortilla soup is awesome! If you like Margaritas, try one here—they’re freshly made.
Just across the street from Taco Mamacita on Sullivan’s Island, you will find Poe’s Tavern at 2210 Middle Street. Not exclusively Mexican per say, but with a Mexican flare! Very popular on their menu are the fish tacos. They offer several different types, including citrus marinated Mahi Mahi, spiced yellow fin tuna, Buffalo shrimp, and spiced swordfish. Also available are a variety of quesadillas, nachos, tortilla chips and different types of salsas.
In-between downtown Charleston and Sullivan’s Island, is Mt. Pleasant. At 1471 Ben Sawyer Boulevard you will find Santi’s. (Just before the Ben Sawyer Bridge that connects Mt. Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island). Here, you’ll find great value and authentic Mexican food. Every type of Mexican dish you can think of, they have on their menu. They also have excellent margaritas and sangria, which are available by the pitcher or glass.
One more thing. If you happen to go to a River Dogs game, look for their new taco stand called the “Wacko Taco Stand” (formerly the Nacho House). Their new item is called the Charlie T(aco) Dog. It includes a soft and hard taco, a hot dog, mustard BBQ sauce, and coleslaw filling. It sounds really awesome!
