For most people, Mom is one of the most influential people in their lives. At some point she has had, currently has, or will have worn the hats of many different professionals such as nurses, teachers, chauffeurs, butlers, waitresses, cooks, janitors, plumbers, psychiatrists, a variety of sports instructors, judges, juries, and much, much more. Why does she do them? Because she loves you!
Of course, we all love Mom too, but take her a little bit for granted sometimes because, frankly, all these hats go with the job. That’s why we have Mother’s Day. So we can stop and actually think about all the many things that make Mom so special. One thing a lot of Moms enjoy is a little time off. That means someone else cooks the meal and cleans up!
Below are some of our favorite, Charleston-inspired Mother’s Day Gift Ideas:
Take her to a tasty dinner, brunch, or lunch at Leaf Café and Bar in downtown Charleston: Aside from a beautiful ambiance, inside and out, Leaf Café serves fantastic Lowcountry fare, including gourmet sandwiches, frickles (fried pickles!), parmesan truffle fries, salads, cheese plates, and much more. Check their website for the menu and hours. Since Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year in the restaurant business, you should make a reservation. They are located ½ block west of King Street at 15 Beaufain Street. Reservations can be made at: 843-793-2230.
Spoil her with a gift certificate to one of Charleston’s award-winning spas: There are a variety of luxury Charleston day spas to choose from, including Urban Nirvana Salon and Day Spa, Earthling Day Spa, and The Spa at Charleston Place Hotel. All of these lavish spas offer customized massages at a very affordable price and what can be more relaxing than a deep tissue or hot stone massage? So relaxing! They all offer a variety of other services, including facials, body wraps, and more.
Help her decorate her home with a Lowcountry classic: a handmade Sweetgrass Basket: If you are looking for a special gift that your mom would love from the local Charleston area, consider a sweetgrass basket. They are uniquely crafted by hand with the knowledge and skill passed down through the generations of the African-Americans originally brought over as slaves. They are beautiful works of art and functional as well. There are many places to purchase them, including the City Market downtown as well as several stands that line Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant. If you wanted to add a little extra, make it into a gift basket and place a few small jars of different honeys from the Savannah Bee Company on King Street. They are all delicious! You can even add something special you found at the Farmer’s Market that is open in Marion Square on Saturday mornings in downtown Charleston.
Take your mom around Charleston harbor on Charleston Harbor Tours’ Mother’s Day Brunch & Riverboat Cruise: During this beautiful and relaxing cruise, you’ll be transported to the classic days of the elegant riverboat aboard Charleston Harbor Tours’ newest vessel, The Carolina Queen, as you sail around the East Coast’s most stunning harbor.
During the Mother’s Day Brunch & Riverboat Cruise, we’ll have a well-appointed gourmet buffet brunch set up by Duvall Catering and Event Design to include local Lowcountry favorites such as spinach & gruyere baked egg casserole, fresh fruit salad, housemade breads and muffins, crispy bacon, seasoned potatoes, classic shrimp salad (served with mixed greens and housemade rolls), and delicious, fresh brewed, locally roasted coffee and fresh orange juice! There will also be a fully stocked cash bar on board with a wide variety of beer, wine, and liquor, and we’ll also be featuring Charleston’s own local Bloody Mary Mix, Charleston Mix! We’ll also have mimosa specials!
During this two-hour Charleston harbor cruise, which happens on Sunday, May 12 from 11:30 am – 1:30pm, we’ll have live entertainment on the second deck, provided by The Rivercity Dixieland Jazz Band.
Whatever you decide, I am sure your mom will love it. Remember, it is the thought that counts! Happy Mother’s Day y’all!
