Ah, Labor Day. That last great hurrah of summer. Fortunately, here in Charleston we still have a few months of great weather ahead but there’s still something about Labor Day that marks a transition from the lazy days of summer to the busy fall season with homework, football games and Halloween parties.
But before all that, let’s enjoy one more summertime weekend. We have three things you must do this three-day weekend to bring your summer to a lovely close.
- Shop the Charleston Farmers Market. Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday vendors fill Marion Square (King and Calhoun streets) with fresh fruits and vegetables and locally made arts and crafts. Plus food vendors are serving up everything from crepes and coffee to burgers and omelets. So spread out on the grass and enjoy brunch in the heart of downtown Charleston.
- Paddleboarding or kayaking on Shem Creek. Nothing says summer like an afternoon on the water. Head to Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant where you just might catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the creek and fishing boats bringing in their haul. Then relax afterward on the patio at Red’s Icehouse or one of the other restaurants situated on the water. Check out Nature Adventures Outfitters and Coastal Expeditions for kayak and paddleboard tours.
- Relax on a rooftop. Watch the sunset over the Charleston skyline at Stars Rooftop & Grill Room on King Street. Sit back in the recycled wicker furniture, order up a cocktail or craft beer and enjoy a final summer evening.
Let’s hear your Labor Day weekend plans in Charleston. How do you like to wind down the summer in the Holy City?
