Murder Mystery Cruise is a ‘Whodunnit’ on the Charleston Harbor

Add some suspense to your summer and join Charleston Harbor Tours for a weekly Murder Mystery Cruise. Each Wednesday evening, guests are transported to the 1920s. Andrew Wheeler owns a Prohibition-era speakeasy called Old Hickory, and to fool the cops, he is re-opening offshore aboard The Carolina Queen. Enjoy suspense, intrigue and a few laughs as the mystery unfolds.

Jo Ellen AspinwallWe caught up with Director Jo Ellen Aspinwall to learn more about her theater background and the fun of mystery theater.

How did you get involved in theater?

I’ve been involved in theater in some way since I was 14 years old. About seven years ago, I realized that it was time to take the plunge and make it my full-time career. I am constantly amazed by the ingenuity and creative genius of the other artists I work with, blown away by their dedication and talent. Theater is a deeply collaborative art and that is very exciting to me. I love watching a group of individual artists meld into a team as we work to develop our best possible production.

Why do you love mystery theater?

It’s liberating to embrace the silliness, the tongue-in-cheek fun of the characters and the storyline. I love to see the audience engage their imaginations and get into the backstories of the characters – these shows give adults permission to play “make believe” for a little while, and the results are wonderful!

What’s your favorite mystery character, show, play?

I always loved those ridiculous chase scenes in “Scooby-Doo” cartoons. I think I learned a lot about timing, surprise and physical comedy from that show. More than once, I’ve referenced those scenes in a rehearsal.

What’s the one thing you love about Charleston?

The diversity! It’s really wonderful how one city can nurture and appreciate such a wide range of cultures and histories. For someone who tells stories for a living, it’s inspiring.

What you hope people are thinking about seeing a mystery cruise performance:

Who did it?” of course! And I hope they are having a good time. That’s what everyone on this team is working for.

The Murder Mystery Cruise is from 8-9:30 p.m. each Wednesday (board at 7:30 p.m.). Cost is $29.95 for adults. Book online or call 888-224-5037.
