Erwin — better known as Shrimp City Slim — started writing songs and now has been working as a full-time musician for 27 years with his band together for most of that time. Erwin has performed all over Europe, Asia and in Latin America.
His Chicago roots blend with New Orleans traditions in a jubilant, upbeat blues and boogie performance. Shrimp City Slim performs a number of original songs mixed with classics. The band members play piano, harmonica, guitar and drums and everyone sings in this interactive show.
How did you come up with the name Shrimp City Slim?
In the late ’80s and ’90s, I worked with and toured a lot with some of the old blues legends … folks with colorful blues names like Big Boy Henry, Drink Small, Lightnin’ Bug Rhodes, and they encouraged me to take a stage name. I was christened “Shrimp City Slim” in 1992 and have been using it ever since. In fact, I even trademarked the name after I found out someone ran a thoroughbred racehorse at Meadowlands in 1997 using my name. By the way, the horse didn’t place.
What’s your favorite song(s) to perform?
“Highway 17 Blues,, “Gone With the Wind,” “Lowcountry Mama” or any of the originals off our nine CDs.
What do you love most about Charleston?
It’s a beautiful, laid-back city with a lot of history.
