Late May and early June are utter magic in Charleston. The world-renowned Spoleto Festival USA comes to the Holy City for two weeks of destination-grade high culture.
This year, the festival runs from May 26 to June 11 and features world-class theater, dance, music, opera, artist talks, special events and more.
Founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti and others, Spoleto is the American counterpart to the annual Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Charleston is an ideal location with its wealth of theaters, churches and other performances spaces.
Accompanying Spoleto is the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, presented by the City of Charleston. Piggy-backing on Spoleto, Piccolo features lower-cost shows, local artists and free community gatherings, as well as an art show in Marion Square.
For those 17 days, Charleston SC is the center of the art world.
