The Charleston area has something for everyone: arts and culture, history, outdoor and nature activities, plus plenty of great shopping, dining and sightseeing. The city is perfect for groups – whether a girlfriends’ getaway weekend, conference gathering or senior citizens tour group.
Here are five great options for groups visiting Charleston:
Art Walk: Charleston’s French Quarter as well as Broad Street are lined with art galleries, many of which feature the work of talented local artists. Wandering these galleries can make for a wonderful afternoon event. Also, on the first Friday of each month, join in the Gallery Row Art Walk from 5-8 p.m. along Broad Street.
Plantation Tours: The area is home to some beautiful historic plantations that offer a variety of tour options: historic house tours, garden tours as well as self-guided tours around the property. Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation & Gardens (pictured above) and Drayton Hall are all located along Ashley River Road so you might be able to visit two in one day. Boone Hall Plantation, founded in 1681, is located in Mount Pleasant, a short drive from downtown Charleston.
Charleston Museum: To truly experience Charleston and South Carolina history, stop off at the Charleston Museum on Meeting Street (open daily). Founded in 1773, the museum is regarded as America’s first museum. It opened to the public in 1824 and over the years has amassed a collection of the most comprehensive gathering of South Carolina materials in the nation.
Bus Tour: Adventure Sightseeing (sister company of Charleston Harbor Tours) provides a variety of tours. Board a climate-controlled bus for an excellent overview of the City of Charleston. Or book combo tours that include a plantation tour and the city tour. Adventure Sightseeing also can provide group transportation services and private tours.
Culinary Tour: Eating, eating and little more eating are practically a requirement on any trip to Charleston. Go behind the scenes to find out what makes Charleston’s culinary scene so special with a tour. Culinary Tours of Charleston offers a variety of tours, including a chef’s kitchen tour, a dessert tour and a tasting tour of upper King Street.
