We’re aware that other communities have light shows celebrating the holiday season. But how many have…two spectacular holiday light festivals?
We know of one – the South Carolina Lowcountry. Our traditional Holiday Festival of Lights in James Island County Park, just across the Ashley River from downtown, and Santee Cooper’s Celebrate the Season’s Holiday Lights Driving Tour in Old Santee Canal Park, about an hour north in Moncks Corner.
Now in its 26th season, the Holiday Festival of Lights runs through January 3 with more than 700 magical light displays to delight the imaginations of children of all ages. Millions of multicolored lights illuminate every holiday-related theme you can think of – flying Santas, blinking candy canes, a spinning dreidel and a dolphin cavorting under the Cooper River bridge – all under the winter night sky.
You can drive through the three mile extravaganza and then park your car and enjoy all kinds of family activities, a 50-ton sand sculpture and sweets.
USA Today has named the Holiday Festival of Lights one of the “10 Best Holiday Light Shows in America.”
Running until the end of the year, the 6th annual Celebrate the Season combines a green-powered light show with a Holiday Fair that runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After lifting your spirits with the visual spectacular, your family can enjoy photos with Santa, a craft market, live music, marshmallow-roasting and more, all hard against Biggin Swamp. The deluge of fun costs just five bucks per carload and proceeds from Celebrate the Season are distributed to local charities.
It’s a feast for the eyes, whichever end of the tricounty area you visit.
